A New York Times Op-Doc shares the story of Chris Williams, who owned and operated a medical marijuana grow in Montana. Williams followed the state's laws on legal cannabis, but that was no protection against a federal raid. The single dad owned firearms, which increased his sentence for drug trafficking. He faced 85 years in prison before U.S. District judge Dana Christensen intervened with a compromise of 5 years, calling the mandatory sentence of more than 80 years unfair and absurd. Some in federal law enforcement want to return to this kind of draconian punishment.
